In the US Congress the memory of the victims of the Khojaly tragedy is honoured
On February 25 a special event took place in the Congress of the USA the purpose of which was to honour the memory of the victims of Khojaly genocide and establish justice in relation to this tragedy.
The event, organized in support of the campaign “Justice for Khojaly!” was attended by the US Congressmen and the Congress staff, the US Co-Chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick, members of the diplomatic corps, including the ambassador of Turkey in the United States Sardar Kylyc, members of the Azerbaijani, Turkish and Jewish community, as well as representatives of the local community.
Opening the ceremony, the head of Azerbaijani center of states of Midwest America Mekhriban Mamedova spoke about bitter marks which were left in genetic memory of the Azerbaijani people by Khojaly genocide, and noted that our nation demand the fair relation to the victims of this genocide.
The ambassador of Azerbaijan in the USA Elin Suleymanov spoke about the tragic consequences of Khojaly genocide. It was reported that the commemoration of the victims of this cruel genocide actually once again confirms the importance of the early restoration of peace in the region. The ambassador emphasized: “Despite all pain, bitterness and injustice that Azerbaijan has faced, our country looks to the future and hopes that the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not far off”.
In their performances the co-chairman of the working group on Azerbaijan in the Congress of the USA Steve Cohen, the chairman of subcommittee of the House of Representatives for Europe and Eurasia of Dane Rohrabacher, congressmen Henry Kullar and Donald Paine noted that the occupation of the Azerbaijani territories from Armenia continues, emphasized the importance of activization of efforts of the USA on resolution of the conflict. They noted the importance of commemoration of such bitter historical events as the Khojaly genocide. Speaking about the value of each human life, Congressmen brought to attention that the existence of a large number of women and children among the victims of the Khojaly tragedy causes great grief. They noted that the commemoration of this tragedy is of great importance and called on the parties of the conflict for peace. The Congressmen noted the importance of intensifying the efforts of the USA to establish peace in the region. In performances the strategic importance of the American-Azerbaijani relations is also noted, the value of further strengthening of partnership between our countries was brought to attention.
At the ceremony a film prepared by Heydar Aliyev’s Fund, narrating about the Armenian-Azerbaijani, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the Khojaly tragedy was shown.
