A few more congressmen joined the working group of the US Congress on Azerbaijan
As the Azerbaijani embassy in Washington reports, congressmen of the 113th convocation Luke Messer, Leonard Lance and Gregory Meeks joined the working group.
Thus, there are already 49 members of the group today.
It should be reminded that the Chairman of the Committee on International Relations and Inter-Parliamentary Relations of the National Assembly (Milli Majlis) Samad Seyidov, MPs Sevinj Fataliyeva and Asim Mollazade during their visit to Washington made numerous meetings in the Congress on July 15-20.

US Congressmen called on President Barack Obama to support Azerbaijan
Members of the US Congress Al Green, Leonard Lance, Mike Fitzpatrick, Pete Gallego and Scott Perry addressing letters to President Barack Obama, urged him to support Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani State News Agency AZERTAC reports.
The congressmen stated that the continuation of the US-Azerbaijan partnership is very important. It is noted that since the restoration of independence, Azerbaijan is a proven and important partner of the USA in a strategically significant region. At a time when US foreign policy faces threats, the country needs the friendship and support of its allies. The USA has established a strong partnership with Azerbaijan, located on a favorable geographical position between Europe and Asia, in various sectors – from the fight against terrorism to ensuring energy security. After the events in the USA on 9/11, 2001, Azerbaijan was among the first countries that offered assistance to the official Washington in the global fight against terrorism.
The letters bring to attention that Azerbaijan provided all-round support for the operations that the US and NATO were conducting in Afghanistan and Iraq. This country is an active participant in the program of the “Partnership for Peace” alliance.
The congressmen noted that the ties of Azerbaijan, which supports US security interests in the region and which is an important partner in global energy security, have been further strengthened by official Washington due to the development of Caspian energy resources by US companies. From this point of view, they particularly noted the importance of the “Contract of the Century” signed in 1994. It was stressed that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline is of great importance in terms of supplying the Caspian’s hydrocarbon resources to US allies in Europe and the development of the South Caucasus region. The congressmen also noted the significant efforts of Azerbaijan in the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor, which will make a great contribution to ensuring the energy independence of Europe. They noted that through the implementation of this project, Azerbaijan will play a major role in providing natural gas to US allies in Europe.
The letters bring to the attention that in economic terms Azerbaijan is one of the most rapidly developing countries in the world, the gross domestic product is growing, the economy of this country is 80 percent of the economy of the South Caucasus, the poverty level has declined to 5 percent. It is underlined that Azerbaijan is one of the largest trade partners of the USA in the South Caucasus.
The congressmen noted that ethnic and religious tolerance in Azerbaijan has an ancient history. In this secular country, the majority of which population are Muslims, over the centuries the Christian and Jewish communities have lived in an atmosphere of peace. The congressmen described Azerbaijan as an important partner of the United States also in the fight against extremism, as an example for many countries in terms of tolerance.
Members of Congress called on President Barack Obama to support further strengthening of the partnership between the US and Azerbaijan.
