PACE report on Azerbaijan will be focused on criticism of Armenia: speakers are already in Yerevan

The functioning of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan will be discussed at PACE summer session that will be held in Strasbourg on June 22-26. The co-rapporteur on the issue of Azerbaijan in PACE is the leader of the European People’s Party Pedro Agramund and the Polish parliamentarian Tadeusz Ivinsky. Both of them are considered to be deputies, having an emphatically Azerbaijani position and leading characters of the book “Caviar Diplomacy”, published by one of the German public organizations.

Now these people have submitted a report on Azerbaijan, about half of which will be devoted to Armenia. In particular, the authors of the report believe that Armenia’s “aggression” hampers the democratization of Azerbaijan, the development of democratic institutions in this country. The authors of the report, instead of talking about more than 80 journalists and representatives of civil society imprisoned in Azerbaijan, say that some Western public organizations and representatives of the Armenian lobby are trying to blacken the first European games organized in Azerbaijan, and make unreasonable calls to boycott the participation of athletes In these games.

Of course, some concerns are expressed in the report about the fact that Azerbaijan still has problems in the field of democracy and human rights, but there is not one specific name, a single figure, and no demands for the release of figures persecuted for political reasons. Moreover, the authors of the report note that the main facts from the report they compiled were taken from the Azerbaijani news agency APA, which is considered the vanguard of the Azerbaijani official propaganda machine.

What should the delegation of Armenia do when the PACE report on Azerbaijan will be presented dedicated to Armenia and criticizing Armenia? It will be more logical if Armenian MPs declare boycotting this session of PACE or at least discussion of this report, as participating in discussions of such a report would mean legitimizing it.

By the way, co-rapporteurs on the issue of Armenia Axel Fischer and Alan Mil will visit Armenia. They gather their information about Armenia not from the newsline of the “Armenpress” agency, but intend to hold meetings with representatives of the opposition and civil society of Armenia. The report titled “The activities of democratic institutions in Armenia” will not be devoted to Azerbaijan, as Armenia has neither caviar nor caviar diplomacy.
