Why the 46th member of the Committee did not participate in the voting on the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide
The last, 46th Congressman did not participate in voting on Resolution No. 252, condemning the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in Ottoman Turkey. The document was adopted on March 4 by the Committee on Foreign Relations of the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
As the Turkish newspaper Vatan reports, Sheila Jackson-Lee was under pressure from representatives of USA defense enterprises, most of which were located in Texas. Sheila Jackson-Lee herself for many years was a supporter of resolutions on the Armenian issue. And, in fact, before the vote, she was under the pressure, on the one hand, Turkish, on the other hand, Armenian lobby. During the discussions, the congressman in her speech, stated that she would vote in favor of the resolution, but entering the meeting hall in the very last minutes of the vote and seeing that the vote was 23:22 in favor of adopting the resolution, she decided not to vote and thus to avoid the tensions of relations with the military industrial enterprises of Texas, at the same time not offending Armenians.
It is recaaled, that 5 giants of the US defense industry appealed to the Committee with a call not to adopt the resolution.
